THE HISTORYΒ β—’

Cuneiform, first attested as a complete writing system at Uruk in Mesopotamia circa 3500 to 3200 BC, is among the earliest known writing systems. Scribes pressed a wedge-shaped reed stylus into wet clay - "cuneiform" means "wedge-shaped" - to record everything from epic poetry to rations of beer.

Cuneiform is wedge-shaped for a practical and completely convincing reason: dragging a sharpened reed through wet clay to make a curve is awkward and slow, and pressing the reed's edge straight down is neither.

The Unicode Standard states the mechanism directly. "Because it was awkward and slow to inscribe curvilinear lines in a piece of clay with a sharpened reed (called a stylus), scribes tended to approximate the pictographs by means of short, wedge-shaped impressions made with the edge of the stylus" (Unicode Standard 16.0, chapter 11).

Why is cuneiform wedge shaped?

Because of what was lying around in southern Iraq.

Clay was the obvious medium in Sumer, the Unicode Standard says, because it was everywhere and could be moulded by hand into cushion-shaped tablets, and a writing tool could be made by sharpening a piece of reed.

Clay and reeds, then. Neither was chosen for elegance. They were chosen because a river valley with little timber and no cheap stone had both in unlimited supply, and a tablet could be made in a minute by anyone.

What follows from that is the whole look of the script. The Standard does not spell out the physics, but it is easy to picture: scratching a curved line through wet clay pushes up a ridge and drags the surface, while pressing the corner of a cut reed straight down leaves a clean triangular impression, wide at the top and tapering to a point. Do that three or four times in different orientations and you have a sign.

So the earliest signs were drawn and the later ones were stamped, and the stamping won because it was faster. The Latin cuneus, meaning wedge, gave us the modern name for the result.

What was the first writing actually used for?

Counting things that belonged to somebody.

This is the part that tends to disappoint people, and it is the most interesting fact about the script. Writing did not begin with poetry, or prayer, or a king wanting to be remembered. It arrived in Sumer alongside a sudden surge in city-building, and with it a jump in the scale of what had to be administered. A large proportion of the earliest signs, the Unicode Standard says, were "devised to represent quantities and commodities for bureaucratic purposes".

Cities got big. Big cities needed records of who owed what, and the records needed to outlast the memory of the person keeping them.

The early signs match that job exactly. In the Standard's own examples, "the head of a bull was used to denote 'cattle'; an ear of barley was used to denote 'barley.'" Some scholars trace the whole system further back, to a system of clay counting tokens, though the Standard is careful to note "there is no general agreement on this point".

The literature came later, and it did come. Yale's Babylonian Collection, more than 45,000 tablets and related pieces, holds "the world's oldest cookbooks, an early account of the heroic king Gilgamesh, the earliest prose descriptions of the constellations, and writings of the first named author in human history (the princess Enheduanna)" (Yale Peabody Museum). A technology built for stocktaking ended up carrying the first author whose name we know.

How did pictures turn into wedges?

By being redrawn, over centuries, in a medium that punished detail.

The earliest stage, the Uruk IV period of roughly 3500 to 3200 BCE, had "an initial repertoire of about 700 characters", and at that stage the signs were mostly pictographic, meaning "a relatively faithful facsimile of the thing signified was traced".

Then something more powerful than simplification happened. Signs started being read by association rather than by resemblance. The Standard's examples are worth having in full: "the representation of a bowl might mean 'bowl,' but it could indicate concepts associated with bowls, such as 'food.' Renditions of a leg might variously suggest 'leg,' 'stand,' or 'walk.'"

And then signs began to be combined. By the Uruk III period, which the Standard dates to 3200 to 2900 BCE, "a head with a bowl next to it was used to denote 'eat' or 'drink'". That is the point, it says, "at which one can truly speak of the first Sumerian texts".

Cuneiform proper, the fully wedge-formed script, "was common from about 2700 BCE". The run from the first pictographic signs to recognisable cuneiform therefore took something like eight hundred years. Nobody involved would have described themselves as inventing writing.

Is cuneiform an alphabet you can spell a name in?

No, and this is where the museum-gift-shop version of cuneiform parts company with the real one.

The Unicode Standard classifies the script as "a logographic writing system with a strong syllabic component", written from left to right on clay tablets. Logographic means a sign can be a whole word. Syllabic means a sign can be a sound cluster rather than a single letter. Neither is what an alphabet does.

The clearest proof is one the Standard hands you in passing. It notes that a picture of a leg "might variously suggest 'leg,' 'stand,' or 'walk'". A sign with three readings is not a letter. Letters have one job; these signs have as many as context gives them, and the reader picks.

So a chart that hands you one cuneiform sign per English letter is a modern arrangement, built by taking a syllable sign whose sound is roughly right and using it as though it were a letter. Ancient scribes did adapt cuneiform to write foreign names, but they did it syllable by syllable and the results were approximations. Egyptian hieroglyphs miss from the opposite direction, with signs for consonants and none at all for vowels.

The honest summary is that both scripts can be borrowed to make your name look ancient. Neither can spell it, and you should be suspicious of anything that says otherwise without saying so.

Which languages were written in cuneiform?

Many, and the Standard lists them without saying how they relate.

Sumerian came first. Then Akkadian, which the Unicode Standard describes as "a Semitic language whose dialects are subsumed by scholars under the heading 'Akkadian'", and whose speakers "became the primary users and promulgators of Cuneiform script". Trade carried the script outward through Babylonia to Elam, Assyria, eastern Syria, southern Anatolia and even Egypt.

The notable languages are listed as "Sumerian, Akkadian (including Babylonian and Assyrian), Eblaite, Elamite, Hittite, and Hurrian". The Standard names them together without grouping them, and the parenthesis is the only relationship it draws: Babylonian and Assyrian are varieties of Akkadian rather than separate languages. A script devised for Sumerian ended up carrying five more, which is the usual sign of a good technology.

How long did cuneiform last, and how much of it survives?

About three and a half thousand years, and an amount of material nobody has finished reading.

The script-usage table in the Unicode Standard runs from the Archaic period to the Neo-Babylonian, ending 539 BCE, but cuneiform outlived the empires. The last known cuneiform inscription is an astronomical text written in 79 or 80 CE (Wikipedia, Cuneiform).

The surviving quantity is the startling part. The Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative, run jointly by UCLA and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, estimates "the number of these artifacts currently kept in public and private collections to exceed 500,000 exemplars", of which more than 400,000 have been catalogued electronically (CDLI). Catalogued is not the same as read: CDLI notes that even basic reference tools for the roughly 120,000 texts of one single period "remain unavailable even to specialists".

There is an obvious candidate reason for that abundance, and it is worth flagging as inference rather than a sourced fact: clay is close to indestructible once dry, and fire bakes an unfired tablet harder rather than destroying it. The material chosen for cheapness may have turned out to be the most durable writing surface anyone has used, which is not something Phoenician on papyrus or runes on wood could ever claim.

The other old scripts mostly did not get that lucky.
