Tajikistan

A landlocked knot of high mountains in Central Asia, Tajikistan is so vertical that more than half the country sits above 3,000 metres, with peaks that were once the highest in the Soviet Union.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS ◢

Three horizontal bands of red, white and green, the white the widest, with a centred gold crown beneath an arc of seven stars. Article 3 of the constitution names the flag among the state symbols and says nothing further about it. The red is conventionally read for unity and sunrise, the white for cotton and the snow-capped peaks and the green for the fertile valleys, with the crown for sovereignty and the seven stars for a number held sacred in Tajik tradition.
