Two vertical bands of gold and white, the white bearing the crossed keys of Saint Peter beneath the papal tiara, and one of the few square national flags. The traditional reading gives the gold key the power to bind and loose in heaven and the silver key the same power on earth, together the spiritual and temporal authority of the papacy.
