South Sudan

The world's youngest country, South Sudan only became independent in 2011. It sits along the White Nile, where vast wetlands host one of Earth's largest wildlife migrations.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS ◢

Three horizontal bands of black, red and green separated by thin white stripes, with a blue triangle at the hoist bearing a gold star. Article 7 of the Transitional Constitution names the flag among the national symbols and leaves the rest to law, assigning it no meaning. The black is conventionally read for the people, the red for the blood shed for freedom, the green for the land, the white for peace, the blue for the waters of the Nile, and the star for the unity of the states.
