Tunisia
The northernmost country in Africa and the point where the continent reaches closest to Europe, Tunisia mixes Mediterranean beaches, Roman ruins and the sands of the Sahara.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANSÂ â—˘
A red field bearing a central white circle in which a red crescent surrounds a five-pointed star. The constitution describes it in those terms, in that order, and assigns no meaning to any of it, leaving the detail to law. The crescent and star are conventionally read as emblems of Islam and of Tunisia's Ottoman-era heritage, and the red as the blood of martyrs.
