Turkmenistan
A desert republic on the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan is mostly Karakum sand and is best known for a fiery gas crater that has been burning continuously for decades.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANSÂ â—˘
A green field with a vertical carpet-pattern stripe near the hoist bearing five guls above two crossed olive branches, alongside a white crescent and five white stars. Article 22 of the constitution provides only that the state symbols exist and that their description and use are established by law, so it neither describes the flag nor assigns it a meaning. The five guls are conventionally read for the major Turkmen tribes and the five stars for the provinces, the green and the crescent for Islam, and the olive branches for the permanent neutrality recognised in 1995.
