Afghanistan

A rugged, landlocked crossroads where the Hindu Kush mountains have funneled traders, empires and caravans between Central and South Asia for thousands of years.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS â—¢

Three vertical bands of black, red and green with the national emblem - a white mosque flanked by wheat sheaves, beneath the Shahada - centred on the red band. Black recalls a troubled past, red the blood shed for independence, and green hope and Islam. This internationally recognised flag is still widely flown; the Taliban administration instead uses a plain white flag bearing the Shahada.
